WEB proxy for Telegram

WEB proxy is a new proxy type inside Telegram itself. The connection runs over HTTPS and looks like a visit to an ordinary website, so it can get through networks where MTProto proxies are blocked — at school, at work or on public Wi-Fi.

WebProxy comes with a personal proxy in the @proxytgrobot bot (Telegram Proxy · VPN). Checked on October 18, 2026.

What your provider's filter sees

An ordinary MTProto proxy sends data over its own protocol, and filters can recognize and cut such connections.

A WEB proxy carries the same encrypted Telegram stream inside regular HTTPS requests to a website. To a filter it looks like a visit to a site on port 443. Switch the type in the diagram to see the difference.

The diagram is simplified. Telegram's developers don't promise that a WEB proxy is hidden from every filtering system — it is one more option, not a guarantee.

WEB proxy questions

What is a WEB proxy in Telegram?

It is a proxy type built into Telegram itself. You add it with a link like any other proxy, but the connection runs over HTTPS and looks like a visit to a website from the outside. That is why it can work where MTProto proxies are blocked.

Which devices does it work on?

On every Telegram platform: iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux. You need an up-to-date app; in Telegram Desktop the WEB type arrived in version 7.1.0.

Does it work for WhatsApp or my browser?

No. A WEB proxy works only inside Telegram; WhatsApp, your browser and other apps connect as usual. To route the whole device you need a VPN, which @proxytgrobot also offers.

Is it the same as Telegram Web?

No. A WEB proxy is not Telegram Web and not a separate app — it is a proxy type in the Telegram app settings. The browser version, web.telegram.org, has no proxy settings at all.

Is it an official Telegram feature?

Yes, the WEB type is built into Telegram: it first appeared in Telegram Desktop 7.1.0. Telegram published the server side as a proof of concept, so the app warns you when you add one: use proxies only from a service you trust.

Does the proxy server see my chats?

No. Telegram encrypts your messages, and the proxy server passes the stream on without decrypting it. The server only sees your IP address, connection time and the amount of data.
