What you need
- Telegram from Google Play, updated to the latest version.
- An up-to-date Android System WebView. According to the developers' description, the Android WEB proxy client runs on top of it, and an outdated WebView is a common reason the connection never comes up.
- A personal proxy in the @proxytgrobot bot: its card has the WebProxy link.
How to connect a WEB proxy on Android
- Update Telegram and WebView
In Google Play, update Telegram and Android System WebView if updates are available.
- Tap WebProxy in the bot
In @proxytgrobot, open your personal proxy card and tap “WebProxy”. Behind the button is a WEB proxy link with the parameters
server=…andsecret=…. - Confirm
A Telegram window lists the server, the WEB type and the secret. Confirm, and the proxy appears in your list.
- Check the status
Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings: the WEB proxy should say “connected”.
Adding it manually
If the link doesn't open the window: Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings → Add Proxy, choose WEB, then enter the server and secret parameters from the WebProxy link. There is no port field — a WEB proxy always uses HTTPS on port 443.
Good to know on Android
The developers list a few specifics in the Android client description. It describes the experimental build, so some details may have changed since.
- The connection is most reliable while Telegram is open. If Android has unloaded the app, open it and wait a couple of seconds.
- A WEB proxy is not used for calls and does not take part in automatic proxy switching.
- If your WebView lacks a required feature, the proxy simply won't connect — your traffic won't quietly go out directly.
- On Android 9 and older, WebView no longer gets updates, according to the Chromium documentation. If a WEB proxy won't connect there, use the Main link from the same proxy card — it is an MTProto proxy.
Common problems
- There is no WEB type. Telegram isn't up to date. Update it in Google Play.
- The link opened in the browser. Go back to Telegram and tap “WebProxy” in the proxy card in the chat with the bot.
- Stuck on “Connecting…”. Update Android System WebView, restart Telegram and turn the proxy on again.
- The proxy drops when Telegram is in the background. Open Telegram and check the proxy is on. Turn off battery optimization for Telegram.

Questions
Does a WEB proxy work in the regular Telegram from Google Play?
Yes. If there is no WEB type in the proxy settings, update Telegram and Android System WebView.
Why update Android System WebView?
The Android WEB proxy client runs through WebView. With an old version the connection may never come up.
Does it cover WhatsApp and my browser too?
No, a WEB proxy works only inside Telegram. For the whole phone you need a VPN, which you can also get in @proxytgrobot.
