WEB proxy in Telegram Desktop

Before you start

The WEB proxy type arrived in Telegram Desktop 7.1.0, released on 22 August 2026. Better install 7.1.2 or newer: it fixes some WEB proxies on Windows and warns you about the risks when you add a proxy.

  • Telegram Desktop 7.1.0 or newer for Windows, macOS or Linux, ideally from desktop.telegram.org. On a Mac, Telegram from the App Store works too.
  • A WebProxy link with a server and a secret. You find it in your personal proxy card in the @proxytgrobot bot.

How to connect

  1. Check the version

    Open Settings → Version and updates. If it's below 7.1.0, update Telegram Desktop.

  2. Open your proxy card

    In @proxytgrobot, go to your personal proxy. The card has three buttons: WebProxy, Main and Reserve.

  3. Click WebProxy

    Telegram Desktop opens the add-proxy window with the fields filled in. Read the warning and confirm.

  4. Turn it on

    Settings → Advanced → Connection type: choose “Use custom proxy” and select your WEB proxy.

  5. Check the connection

    Open any chat. If messages load and there's no “Connecting...” at the top, the proxy works.

Manual setup

If the link didn't open, enter the details yourself: Settings → Advanced → Connection type → Use custom proxy → Add proxy, then choose WEB. Item names may differ slightly in your version.

  • Hostname — the domain without https:// and without a port. If the address has a path, enter it together with the domain.
  • Secret — the whole secret parameter from the WebProxy link, with no spaces at the ends.
  • Port — not needed: a WEB proxy always uses HTTPS on port 443.

Common problems

  • No WEB type. Your version is below 7.1.0. Update Telegram Desktop.
  • Added, but “Connecting...” won't go away. On Windows, some WEB proxies didn't work before 7.1.2. Update and turn the proxy on again.
  • “Use system proxy settings” is selected. Then Telegram ignores your WEB proxy. Switch to “Use custom proxy”.
  • You typed https:// or a port. The field takes the host name only.
  • A domain with non-Latin letters. Enter it in its ASCII form, which starts with xn--.

Telegram published the WEB proxy server side as a proof of concept, so Telegram Desktop warns about the risks: add proxies only from a service you trust. On a phone: WEB proxy on Android.

Which Telegram Desktop version supports a WEB proxy?

The WEB type arrived in 7.1.0 on 22 August 2026. We recommend 7.1.2 or newer: it fixes some WEB proxies on Windows.

Do I need to enter a port?

No. A WEB proxy has no port field: the connection always runs over HTTPS on port 443.

Does it work in Telegram for macOS from the App Store?

Yes, according to the service it works there too. If there's no WEB type, update the app.

Does a WEB proxy work in Telegram Web?

No. The browser version, web.telegram.org, has no proxy settings at all — you need the app.
